Offering 10 percent more power and producing 18 percent less heat than its current UPS solution, the new generation Power Xpert 9395P from Eaton promises market-leading efficiencies or New Zealand companies and greater assurance of clean uninterrupted power for mission-critical applications.
Now available from Eaton power quality specialists, UPS Power Solutions Ltd, the new Eaton 9395P is a big step forward in UPS development and takes power efficiency to a new level leading the UPS market, says managing director Graham Blackmore.
“The Eaton Power Xpert 9395P reduces losses and energy consumption with an extremely high level of double conversion efficiency of 96.3 percent from as little as 20 percent load through to 100 percent load. Other N+1 systems available in the market typically attain power efficiency percentages only in the eighties and early nineties, and only over a much narrower load range of between 30 and 50 percent. This elevates the new-generation Eaton 9395P into a performance class of its own and costs a lot less to run over its lifetime, reducing OPEX.”
Blackmore says UPS Power Solutions welcomes the new UPS model and the advances it brings to the large datacentre market. The release follows the introduction last year of the Eaton 93PM 200kW UPS which offers up to 97 percent efficiency in double conversion.
“Eaton continues to lead the world in UPS development and UPS Power Solutions continues to lead the introduction of Eaton top-end systems in New Zealand. Our main business focus is on the 3-phase Eaton UPS solutions for data centres and large commercial, institutional and industrial applications, primarily at Tier 3 and above.”
In New Zealand to launch the Eaton Power Xpert 9395P, Eaton’s 3 phase UPS product manager, Alex Hanoumis, says the 9395P builds on the success and track record of the 9395 which has served New Zealand industry for over seven years, but with redesigned power modules which boost the online power efficiency, lowering OPEX and the cooling requirement.
“Replacing an older generation UPS with a 9395P will be paid back in two to three years.”
Hanoumis says the Eaton 9395P completely isolates output power from all input power anomalies and delivers 100 percent conditioned, perfect sine-wave output, even during severe power disturbances.
“The 9395P provides reliable protection against all nine types of power disturbance through its online double conversion design, but when power conditioning is not required, the Energy Saver System (ESS) suspends the power modules and improves efficiency to 99 percent.
“The power is fed through the static bypass switch and the UPS is ready to switch to double-conversion mode in less than two milliseconds if pre-set input limits are exceeded. In addition to extremely low losses, the ESS mode provides filtering against fast low-energy transients. It is simply the most advanced, most reliable, fastest-reacting energy-saver architecture available.”
Hanoumis says he has over ten years’ experience in the critical power industry and has taken on lead roles handling power quality system in some of Australasia’s largest data centres and critical sites. His expertise supplements the skills and experience of the UPS Power Solutions team of 11, based in Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch, says Graham Blackmore.
Factory-trained in Eaton solutions, Blackmore has extensive experience in site clean power configuration ranging from single systems through A-B Power systems to full paralleled solutions for maximum power protection. As a specialist UPS engineer of 23 years and a registered electrician with an NZCE in electrical engineering, Blackmore is able to provide advice and engineering support for small single UPS systems through to complex Tier 3 Data Centre installations. This capability extends to UPS Power Solutions staff.
“All our specialist engineers are current registered electricians who can take care of anything on site that needs to be done. We are here to help site electricians deal with local issues and provide project management assistance where needed for critical functions and trouble-free installation and commissioning.”
Design support is also available for consulting engineers. UPS Power Solutions can design complete solutions that will ensure the continuity of clean power on any site, including integration with standby power generation, says Blackmore.
“We work well with electrical consultants and are pleased to provide localised design input on technical matters such as the bypass, input/output sizing, dual feeding, battery set-up and system footprint to help arrive at the best configuration while ensuring the UPS integrates with everything downstream. Blackmore says the value of UPS Power Solutions’ design capability was recognised in the construction of New Zealand’s largest data centre where the company was contracted to assist with the design, implementation and testing of a 2.2 MVA N+1 system utilising four Eaton 9395 550 kVA UPSs.
“All clients regardless of size gain from our state-of-the-art workshop facilities with full three phase supply. Our engineers service, configure, simulate and test UPSs to ensure their performance and reliability.” But UPS Power Solutions also supplies and services smaller units.
The new Eaton 93PM UPS is packaged in a small footprint to fit a 600 x 900 computer rack. “It has a capex-reducing modular design so you can scale your system to changing demands and ‘pay as you grow’ up to 200 kW. It offers up to 97 percent efficiency in double conversion and, like the 9395P, has a large touchscreen LCD providing useful status information and back logs, and a full suite of power management and connectivity options. Blackmore says apart from being highly efficient, the 93PM has improved power factor correction with an output of unity.

UPS Power Solutions also supplies single phase UPS’s through electrical wholesalers. Auckland branch manager, Liz Hatton, says the quality and performance of these units meets the same high standards set by Eaton.
